DMC Floss Color Inspiration: 221

October is my favorite month of the year. It’s officially Fall, and it’s perfectly in-between with the weather – not too hot and not too cold. “Sweater weather.” My favorite. A little gloomy but mostly invigorating. The “calm before the storm” of November and December. (Also the month of my birthday – but I like to claim that I’m still unbiased toward other months.) Today I want to celebrate one of the warmest colors of fall – red.

DMC’s floss color #221, Very Dark Shell Pink, is a sweet red, with undertones of – you guessed it – pink. But it reads to me as a rich, dark, brick red, and I love it. It makes me crave luxe fabrics like velvet and cashmere, and yearn for a drive through the color-changing mountains of New England – New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. (See one of my favorite artists, Maine’s Donna Lacey Derstine, in the inspiration below! She paints delightful folk art and creates stunning works with pastel that capture the New England spirit one-hundred percent!)

Fall colors like DMC #221 make me want to go pick apples fresh from a tree and eat cinnamon-sugar donuts (my favorite!) and wear cozy sweaters and jackets. It makes me wish I could go back to the Sundance Harvest Market, just up the canyon from where I live, to breathe in fresh mountain air, taste delicious food, and meet local artisans. It makes me think of crunchy fall leaves, cinnamon, upcoming holidays, and delicious treats. DMC #221 for the WIN, everybody!

A a side-note – my late grandmother used to volunteer at her local Ten Thousand Villages (#2 – Beads & Tassel Necklace). This store is wonderful. They sell products that have been hand crafted by people in third world countries. The majority of the proceeds goes back to these people and all store “employees” are volunteer. Incredible!
