Stitch People Stars: Theresa Mayfield

If you stay in touch with us on our Instagram or Facebook pages, you may have seen that we’re currently obsessed with this particular stitcher! Theresa came to us through the Stitch People Academy and since then has gone on to show us the true meaning of creativity! We’re so enamored with her, we wanted to learn a little bit more about her:

Tell us a bit about yourself!

Hi, I’m Theresa! I was born and raised in the Seattle area, but moved to Boise, ID my senior year of high school. I met my husband there and we got married a few years later. This year my husband joined the Air Force, and these Northwesterners moved from Idaho to Enid, OK for his pilot training! We have a Border Collie/Lab mix named Dash and a fluffy black cat named Toulouse. Besides cross stitching, I enjoy baking, Bible study, all things Disney, coffee dates, watching The Office and Parks and Rec, and long walks through Hobby Lobby.

Tell us about your business!

I was a medical assistant for a neurosurgery clinic back in Idaho, but when my husband joined the Air Force I decided I wanted to take a break from having a “real” job and do something a little more suited to moving around the country. I just started my Etsy shop, Stitched to a T, last month. I am so excited to turn my hobby into a job and see how it goes!

How did you first come across the Stitch People book?

I kept seeing the ad for the book on Instagram, and I thought it was the cutest ever! I had never cross stitched before, but I bought a cross stitch kit at Michael’s to see if I liked it. Once I did that I was hooked and just HAD to order the book.

What was your first Stitch People piece and how did it go?

My first piece was of my little family! It took me a little while to get the hang of designing my patterns and actually stitching them, so there were definitely several mistakes. But overall it turned out so cute and I now have it displayed in my home!

What have you enjoyed about making the portraits?

I love how personalized the portraits can be. They make the most meaningful, heartfelt gifts and I just love seeing people recognize themselves, their family, and their pets in cross stitch form. I also am so happy to have found a crafty hobby that I enjoy and feel confident in.

What’s been your favorite piece so far?

I think my favorite piece was one I made for my mom of our family. It was so fun to choose outfits and hairstyles that represented each of us.

Where is your favorite place to stitch?

Probably under a cozy blanket on the couch with my husband while watching football or one of our favorite shows.

How have you developed your cross stitching skills?

Stitching gifts for others has definitely helped me make progress. I think I learn something new with every portrait! The Stitch People Community Facebook group has also helped so much. Everyone is so kind to offer tips, tricks, and advice.

What advice would you give to people just starting their cross stitching journey?

If you have never cross stitched before and are intimidated at all by it, start with an easy kit from a craft store! Choose one with big blocks of solid color. Also look up videos and tutorials if you are confused by instructions. There are so many more resources out there than you could ever think of!

Where can we see more of your work (Shop, Instagram, Facebook etc)?

You can always find me at my Etsy shop Stitched to a T or on Instagram
