Turning cluttered in to cross-stitch!

by Hillary Nestrick

Happy New Year, Y’all!!

I, for one, am happy as a pig in mud to be back to our regularly scheduled program!! I don’t know about everyone else, but the second half of our 2022 was not easy for my little family of four! With that being said, I want to start on a funny note for the first blog post of 2023! We’re going for the snark!!

In my house, my children eat snark for breakfast! They’re raised on snark, sarcasm, and dry wit! I’ve been wanting to do a snarky stitch that I can hang somewhere and see everyday to give me a chuckle! Figured I’d take y’all on a little snarky journey with me!!

Snark fan too? Get a monthly snark fix here!

As you can see above, my house is cluttered. It’s like we set a “space for stuff” budget and are WAY over budget!! These pictures, taken today, 1/10/23, are even after we’ve been purging stuff for the past couple years! Needless to say, I knew 100% that I needed to find a quote that centers on the state of my house!

STEP 1: FIND YOURSELF A SNARKY QUOTE!!

This popped up on my FB feed last Summer, I absolutely loved it and thought it was PERFECT for my stitch!

STEP 2: PICK A BORDER AND FONT STYLE!!

For the border, I chose to go with the small flower design on page 26 of Stitch People Borders, Embellishments and Motifs. It’s actually one of my favorite books from Stitch People and is definitely one of my most frequently used books! I highly recommend you check it out!!

For the font, I chose the second font on page 139 of Do-it-yourself Stitch People 2nd Edition. I use this font a lot because it’s only one square wide, except the M and W, and only four squares high, which makes having a higher number of words fit easily in a 4X6 pattern design space!

STEP 3: STITCHING SUPPLIES!!

If you’re new here, Hi! I’m Hillary and I’m obsessed with all color! Choosing floss colors is always a fun time for me and whenever I can, I like spicing up single-color patterns with a multi-color palette!!

I chose to use the quilt I have on my stitching chair in my office as inspiration for my color palette.

The floss colors I used for the flowers in the border are:

  • DMC 154 (Very Dark Grape)
  • DMC 598 (Light Turquoise)
  • DMC 3808 (Ultra Very Dark Turquoise)
  • DMC 3830 (Terra Cotta)

For the backstitching I used:

  • Sulky Petites 12 wt. in Black (1005)
  • Sulky Petites 12 wt. in Japanese Fern (1815 – color matched to DMC 166).

A quick note: 1 strand of Sulky 12 wt. is equivalent to 1 ½ strand thickness of DMC and I have found it great to use and punches up my back-stitched font wonderfully!!

Lastly, I used DMC Charles Craft Aida 14 ct white for my fabric.

STEP 4: FRAME IT AND HANG IT!!

Next, frame your finished stitch!! I adhered mine first to a 5X7 self-stick mounting board and taped the mounted stitch to an 8X10 frame mat. Self – stick mounting boards can be found at just about any major craft retailer. Every time I’m in my favorite go to store, I snag a few. I horde them like gold!! 😂

Last, but certainly not least, hang your finished stitch and pat yourself on the back for your creative genius once again!!
